A strong back will lead to a strong body. The back is the core of the body, and a bad functioning one can lead to a lot of problems. Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints and people of all walks of life will suffer from it. Often it is a result of bad biomechanics, whater it be sitting at a desk all day, or simply bad posture when standing. Back problems are extremely common, and a big part of the problem is usually a lack of musculature, bad biomechanics, or muscle imabalances in the area. The best way to fix this? Do a varied and well though out workout in the gym. Weight lifting back exercises will help you to achieve this.
If you are suffering from back problems, or undergoing something like bulging disc treatment, it might be a good idea to do some easier rehabilitation exercises to start. Gain some control over your core area, and slowly strengthen your lower back. The following are some great exercises for this:
- Bird Dog
- Single Leg Bridges
- Supermans
If you are not suffering from any particular back problem, and have a relatively healthy back, but need some strengthening, then here is one great exercise you can do to really target your back muscles and ensure you are strong and healthy. Remember that a healthy and strong back requires a healthy and strong posterior chain, and this one exercise will address all of that, will help iron out some imbalances and ensure that you can lift heavy and progress easily.
Deadlift: This is the ultimate exercise that you should have in your program. Not only does it work the back, it does it functionally, by including glute strengthening and teaching you how to control the important muscles. This movement is similar to a lifting movement that all of us will perform every day, regardless of our home life or work. Understanding and performing this exercise correctly will help you to strengthen your back in a functional way. There are a few varieties that you can do, such as the stiff leg deadlift, and the sumo deadlift, however the basic dead lift will always come out the winner, and you will hit much more than just your lower back.
